What You'll Do

  • Lead operational, tactical, and strategic aspects of rail logistics department across all lines of business for CMC’s US operations. Total team size is 10, covering 35,000 railcar shipments annually.
  • Function as the primary decision-maker in relationships with railroad vendors. Lead and oversee all negotiations.
  • Set the tone in interacting with railroads as the senior point-of-contact. Seek to build relationships to deliver responsiveness, consideration, and maximum value to CMC.
  • Strategically position CMC and identify leverage opportunities with railroad vendors.
  • Own and maintain the strategic plan for railcar fleet assets. Establish a comprehensive plan and drive buy-in at the executive level.
  • Maintain a multi-year outlook on railcar requirements based upon expected rail volume demand.
  • Navigate the on-going strategic balance between private CMC fleet and railroad-owned car utilization.
  • Preserve strategic agility to manage through up and down market cycles.
  • Establish a 10-year outlook and strategic plan for railcar acquisition (manufacturers and lessors) and divestment (returns and retirements).
  • Seek to deliver maximum value to CMC, considering net present value cost, cash flow, asset utilization, and railcar availability/service level.
  • Own and maintain relationships with fleet services providers (repairs/maintenance, taxes, etc.). Outline requirements and expectations and drive vendor performance and position CMC to derive maximum benefit from these relationships.
  • Drive tactical and strategic coordination and deployment of rail assets and capabilities.
  • Foster strong internal working relationships (e.g. Sales, Inventory/Planning teams) to support planning execution of optimal sourcing (P2P), mode adherence, inventory management, and responsiveness.
  • Oversee daily rail operational execution with solid supporting administrative processes.
  • Establish and maintain key performance indicators for rail operational performance.
  • Drive high-level fleet utilization by leading team to capitalize on reload opportunities. Capture value on both car utilization and reduced rail freight cost.
  • Lead coordination across geographic divisions and lines of business to support operational excellence.
  • Lead Commercial Excellence: work with Sales and Operations teams to ensure products are delivered on-time. Guide direct team to maintain strong customer service mindset.
  • Leverage technology to enhance capabilities, incorporate automation, and elevate performance.
  • Generate and own talent development actions for team and support succession plans for U.S. logistics team

What You'll Need

  • At least 7 years’ experience in transportation and logistics managing railroad movements and relationships with railroad vendors.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ leadership experience managing teams of 5+ or more employees. Experience managing remote staff a benefit.
  • Strong knowledge base of railroad transportation, logistics, and operations management.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience/skillset. Must be able to lead rail logistics department to a high level of performance.
  • Strategic perspective/vision to position rail operations for sustained success and robust logistics performance as well as support strategic positioning of broad logistics organization.

Your Education

  • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred
