What You'll Do

  • Champion a Safety Culture - Promote a robust safety culture by enthusiastically ensuring adherence to regulations and procedures
  • Supporting company safety programs, and fostering an environment of personal integrity and genuine care for each other's development and well-being.
  • Team Management – Effectively lead the melt shop team by supervising the recruitment,  hiring, training, coaching and discipline of department personnel
  • Additionally, perform performance evaluations, create individual development plans and assign tasks to the most appropriate team members.
  • Manage training program to maintain and improve process performance and develop all salary and hourly employees.
  • Process Management - Utilize Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and other forms of data analytics to meet or exceed departmental goals, objectives, & forecasting models.
  • Collaborate with logistics to optimize delivery, storage, and inventory of raw materials
  • Monitor market trends to assess impact on costs and availability. Coordinate with raw material supply chain for the lowest billet cost, considering scrap and conversion expenses.
  • Strategic Planning – Collaborate with the Director of Operations and department managers to develop an ongoing strategic plan, detailing a roadmap for the next 5, 10, and 15 years.
  • Advocate sound business practices to support mill operational processes to safely produce a quality product within budget, on schedule and in alignment with plant and company strategy
  • Perform performance evaluations, create individual development plans and assign tasks to the most appropriate team members
  • Manage the procurement of raw materials required for steel production, such as ferrous scrap, alloys and fluxes
  • Strategic Planning – Work alongside the Director of Operations and Department Managers to consistently develop the future strategic plan, outlining a roadmap for the next 5, 10, and 15 years.
  • Administrative tasks - Establishing effective working relationships with plant employees, the, other departments, and corporate.
  • Manage melt shop maintenance department working together with reliability department, engineering department and coordinating with other production departments
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive refractory maintenance program to optimize lifespan and performance
  • Ensures compliance with employment laws and regulations, minimizing the company’s exposure to adverse outcomes of complaints, litigation, audits and inspections
  • Support continuous process improvements plant wide include: product quality, processes and cost efficiency

What You'll Need

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in a Melt Shop environment with knowledge of different scrap types, fluxes, power/ burner programs, EAF refractory, EAF and Continuous Casting practices
  • Understanding of metallurgy, refractory materials, their properties, and applications.
  • Familiarity with safety and environmental regulations within the steel industry
  • Ability to work with the other Managers as a part of the Management Team
  • Exceptional leadership and team building skills along with effective listening and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Organizational skills for keeping track of various budgets, employees and schedules simultaneously.
  • Possess strong data analytical skills, an understanding of lean manufacturing methods and a familiarity with production management systems

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Engineering or a related field. Additional educational experiences are a plus
