Essential Functions and Responsibilities

-Prepare ladles for tapping without delay to the operation
-Inspect ladle refractory after every heat and make appropriate decisions
-Maintain ladle slide gates and porous plug systems for each ladle
-Maintain and enter ladle maintenance records into a database to control the life of key refractory components
-Use an oxygen lance and hand held torch to perform routine operational tasks
-Assist maintenance personnel when requested/needed
-Ensure housekeeping is performed
-Communicate with fellow workers and others about possible production issues, concerns, and needs
-Troubleshoot work related problems using job knowledge, experience, and by communicating with others
-Suggest improvements in work methods/procedures by verbally communicating ideas with supervisors or others
-Perform minor/routine maintenance or repairs as needed without the assistance of maintenance personnel.
-Periodically attend training as required
-Attend and participate in safety meetings

  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Aptitude to learn and operate the refractory crane
  • Experience as a first helper, second helper or material preferred


The person awarded this position will also be required to learn and perform the duties of the first helper, second helper, and material handler.

Experience and Qualifications

-Basic Computer Skills

-Refractory crane operation
-work on a rotating shift which will include nights, weekends, and holidays
-some overtime will be required
-ability to work in high heat situations

Your Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
